Designed and built by Herbert W. Burns, the Hideaway, a mid-century modern gem, was featured in Architectural Record in 1947 as the first motor court inn concept. Photographs taken by Julius Shulman will be on display in the living room lounge.

Burns was also an innkeeper and operated this hotel as the Town & Desert Inn with his wife Gail. He added the "400" next door in 1956. He also designed the Chase (as a one-level hotel), the Village Manor (now the Orbit In), and the Desert Hills Hotel, all of which are located in the Historic Tennis Club District.
