Event Description
Da Vaal Estates is the Desert-X of midcentury resorts. Five X-shape, single-story buildings, each with four condos, are clustered around a central pool and gardens. Designed by architect Val Powelson in 1960, built by Robert Marx - son of Gummo Marx. Powelsons modernist designs were unconventional; he played with structure and geometry at every opportunity, such as the nearby gullwing house for Maranz. Da Vaal Estates is unlike anything else designed for communal living at the time. Powelson didnt like right angles, and Da Vaal Estates demonstrates that distaste in spades. Powelson gave units an extraordinary look, with cut-away, sharply angled roofs, large overhangs, and triangular chimneystacks of stacked blocks. The X-plan of the five buildings made ingenious use of the two and a half acre site and gave homeowners an extra level of privacy with no communal walls other than a central storage area. Each home has a remarkable sense of space; dual aspect walls of glass let in loads of light and give great views.

Tour several homes in this community, marvel at the clever X-plan layout and the unique floor plans. Many homes have original features and have been wonderfully restored. Funds to be used to replace the original black top road.
